Abstract

One form of modernization is reflected in advancements in the maritime transportation sector. KM. Dharma Rucitra VIII is an example, originally a Japanese-built vessel. The ship was acquired by PT. Dharma Lautan Utama and later modified at PT. Adiluhung Saranasegara Indonesia. Initially functioning as a car carrier, the vessel was converted into a passenger ship, resulting in the addition of several new passenger spaces, as well as the retention of some existing spaces that were not optimally designed in terms of interior comfort. Therefore, a study is required to determine how to plan and design the ship’s interior using a new concept while maintaining essential factors such as functionality, comfort, safety, aesthetics, economic value, ergonomic standards, and applicable regulations. Based on the identified issues, the concept of useful and low maintenance combined with a modernized Indonesian cultural nuance was developed. To enhance comfort and support the concept, the designer applied two comparative design styles: Modern-Heritage and Japan-Scandinavian. These styles were evaluated using questionnaires and a weighted method. The results from both approaches indicated that the Modern-Heritage style was the most suitable, as it aligns better with the concept and the vessel’s operational routes. Subsequently, an economic analysis was conducted to estimate the costs incurred by the shipyard and to calculate the Break-Even Point (BEP), determining the level of expenditure required for the company to recover its investment.
